6 July, Shillong: Hundreds of Tibetans thronged the picturesque Gaden Choeling Buddhist Monastery perched atop a hillock to celebrate the 82nd birth anniversary of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The celebration began with the prayers led by the monks of Gaden Choeling Monastery, followed by official celebration and cultural events.
Speaking at the occasion, Meghalaya state legislator Shri Sanbor Shullai recounted how blessed the people of Shillong felt when His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited the hill town in 2014, and how he himself was so overwhelmed at the visit of His Holiness at the Buddhist monastery which lies near his home and his constituency.
Shri Yeshi Tsering, Chief Secretary of the Government of Meghalaya, spoke about how His Holiness’ message of peace and religious harmony is all the more relevant in today’s world.
Recapitulating His Holiness’ message from the past years, he stated that the best birthday gift His Holiness has asked for is to keep our mind and heart more compassionate and develop the sense of genuine concern for others’ well being, and he urged everyone to do so.
The Abbot of the Gaden Choeling Monastery also addressed the gathering.
The Tibetan Settlement Officer of Shillong Mr Tenzin Jamchhen and the Chairperson of the Local Tibetan Assembly Ms Tsering Dolma read out the statements of Kashag and Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile respectively.
Adding to the jubilant atmosphere of the occasion, the students of Sambhota Tibetan School, local Tibetans and Monpa community presented series of cultural performances.
To mark the joyous occasion, the Settlement Officer and the Secretary of Tibetan Settlement Office of Shillong called on the Hon’ble Incharge Governor of Meghalaya Shri Banwarilal Purohit and Hon’ble Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Shri Abu Taher Mondal and presented gifts on behalf of Shillong Tibetan community.
